The sad truth is that no one in the world including Larry Page and Sergei Brin - co-founders of Google can arrange a top spot. It is just not possible. The engine that is Google is too complicated to make things easily understandable and open to simple manipulation. So what happens is the each SEO person builds up a list of magic things that sometimes work and they stick to them.
I personally spend at least 8 hours a week (usually more) in direct study of how and why Google does things. And let me tell you that I learn more every day. And every day I think that I have so much more to learn. In fact I envy the certainty that some SEO's have about their trade. I don’t have that certainty of belief and I believe that certainty is never attainable because the factors that affect search results are so complex.
