BART (Baragwanath Active Renal Tracking) is a specialized electronic medical record that has been developed by Nephrologists in conjunction with the software development house Syncrony. Created in 2005 by doctors working in the world’s largest hospital, Chris Hani Baragwanath, it has been used on a daily basis to capture and track the clinical characteristics which define kidney disease. This would include all aspects relating to the patient's evolving clinical picture such as blood results, medication, health care givers opinions and more.
Although there are many other computerized databases available, BART is a unique system which follows patients from predialysis to dialysis to eventual transplantation. It includes all aspects of their clinical management, from blood results and investigations to doctors notes and medications. It is also very much a work in progress with constant updates and improvements being made available.Designed using visual basic, the eventual database is stored on Microsoft's SQL server and has proven to be very robust in the handling of increasing amounts of data. BART is now established in both the Private and Government sector and has been installed in 15 renal units around South Africa
